How to store rice so it stays fresh
Rice keeps well for months when it's stored dry, cool and sealed. Here's how to do it at home or in a shop.
Keep it dry and sealed
Moisture is rice's main enemy. Store rice in an airtight container so it doesn't pick up humidity, which can lead to clumping, odour and spoilage.
Glass, food-grade plastic or steel containers with tight lids all work well. For bulk storage, keep sacks off the floor and away from damp walls.
Cool, dark and away from pests
Store rice in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat. A pantry shelf or a closed cupboard is ideal.
To discourage weevils and other pests, some households add a few dried bay leaves or store rice in the refrigerator in hot, humid months. Always keep the storage area clean.
Rotate your stock
Use older stock first. For shops and kitchens, label packs with the date received and follow first-in, first-out so nothing sits too long.
Brown rice has natural oils in its bran layer, so it has a shorter shelf life than polished white rice — buy it in smaller quantities and use it sooner.
